Two Planks and a Passion: The Dramatic History of Skiing
Roland Huntford's brilliant history begins 20,000 years ago in the last ice age on the icy tundra of an unformed earth. Man is a travelling animal, and on these icy slopes skiing began as a means of survival.
That it has developed into the leisure and sporting pursuit of choice by so much of the globe bears testament to its elemental appeal. In polar exploration, it has changed the course of history. Elsewhere, in war and peace, it has done so too. The origins of skiing are bound up in with the emergence of modern man and the world we live in today.
Beyond Birkie Fever
Cross-country skiers are hearty folk. The compulsion to race marathon-length distances in subfreezing conditions requires an eternally optimistic and fiercely independent spirit. The fear of blinding snow or paralyzing cold does not deter them, and it has been said that skiers do not merely laugh at adversity; they are completely oblivious to its existence. America's greatest cross-country ski race is the American Birkebeiner or "Birkie" for short. Every year, thousands of people journey from all over the globe to Hayward, Wisconsin, for a world-class celebration of life, winter, and the competitive spirit. Prior to the race, local participants find themselves in the throes of a unique and natural euphoria. They thrill at the prospect of participating shoulder to shoulder with elite international competitors in a wild race through the great Northwoods wilderness. Beyond Birkie Fever is the story of how America's magnificent cross-country ski marathon can expand your horizons and be the gateway to experiences beyond anything you'd ever hoped to imagine!
Don't Look Back: Olympic Skiing Competitor and Coach Shares His Story and Training Program (Stackpole Classics)
Cross-country skiing is not an exact science, author John Morton writes in his preface. Even though the sport has been influenced by recent technological changes, there are still countless variables that make consistent top performance all but impossible. This observation is borne out at the World Cup or Olympic level of international competition, where year after year different individuals from various nations emerge as champions. As a former Olympian and Olympic coach, Morton draws on his firsthand experience to outline what makes a great skier. The combination of Conditioning, Technique, Psychology, Health and Nutrition, and Equipment and Waxing can make or break an athlete at any level.

Snow Business: Nordic Adventures of a Ski Rep
A humorous account of what its really like to be a ski rep
A useful guide for aspiring ski reps, providing insight into a typical winter season
Explores Swedish culture and traditions portrays Sweden in an honest, different light
Andrew Reed spent a winter as a ski rep for a well known UK travel company in the resort of Åre, Sweden. The book is a humorous account of his experiences from the daunting first week of the selection process in Austria, the convoluted journey by road, ship and rail to the resort itself and through the hectic first month of setting up in resort.
The chapters that follow reveal a very different type of ski resort to the normal alpine resort with activities that included snowmobile safaris, husky dog sledging, chaotic reindeer rides and visits to the spectacular frozen waterfall. Even the Northern Lights and the real Santa Claus make brief appearances.
The book offers a realistic, honest perspective and explains the strains and pressures of the job, including working in close proximity to others over such a long, hard season which finished well beyond the alpine resorts. It will help aspiring reps to prepare by offering useful advice and encouragement, but it is also of interest to the wider ski and travel community.
Snow Business is based on Andrews Nordic adventures and it provides a fascinating insight into the country, its people and its traditions, along with the quirks of the language. It will appeal to those who love all things skiing, or those with an interest in Swedish culture.
