The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 19331945, vol. III: Camps and Ghettos under European Regimes Aligned with Nazi Germany
This monumental seven-volume encyclopedia, prepared by the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, examines the universe of camps and ghettos)more than 40,000 in allthat the Nazis and their allies operated, from Norway to North Africa and from France to Russia.
Volume III describes sites under the control of states that aligned themselves with Nazi Germany, as allies, satellite countries, or independent collaborationist regimes. For a variety of reasons, France, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and other such states each undertook the persecution, and often the murder, of people it considered undesirable or threatening. Such target groups included Jews, who were often killed directly or handed over to the Germans. Other victims spanned any number of ethnic or national groups, or political or military opponents. Each state created its own unique mix of detention sites under a variety of agencies, but all with goals that mirrored those of Nazi Germany. From the far north of Finland to Frances west African colonies, this network of sites did its work with little or no input from the Germans. This volume, with its descriptions of the individual sites and broad introductions to the regimes that governed them, adds to our understanding of a system that was truly European in scale, and not solely a German undertaking.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945, Volume 1 (Volume I)
This monumental 7-volume encyclopedia, the result of years of work by the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will describe the universe of camps and ghettossome 20,000 in allthat the Nazis and their allies operated, from Norway to North Africa and from France to Russia. For the first time, a single reference work will provide detailed information on each individual site.
This first volume covers three groups of camps: the early camps that the Nazis established in the first year of Hitler's rule, the major SS concentration camps with their constellations of subcamps, and the special camps for Polish and German children and adolescents. Overview essays provide context for each category, while each camp entry provides basic information about the site's purpose; the prisoners, guards, working and living conditions; and key events in the camp's history. Material from personal testimonies helps convey the character of the site, while source citations provide a path to additional information.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
An avant-metal spectacle of the most obscene, obese and obstinate, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum sound like a brigade of skeleton soldiers marching through post-industrial cities decorated by the finest of silken banners to cover up the decay. Singer Nils Frykdahl can croon with a baritone even deeper than Simon Bonney, with the same sense of dark philosophy, as he does on the opening "Hymn to the Morning Star." But he's just as likely to bark like James Hetfield caught up in the rush of soiled guitars and battering ram drums of "The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens the Discussion" or "Phthisis" where he is joined by Carla Kihlstedt, a wicked queen at her dark lord's side. The instrumentation is as rich as it is fragmented, with chimes, strings and the sound of clacking chicken bones making way for more distorted oblivion when Frykdahl intones "Let us dream now, the impossible dream of a math professor" on "FC: The Freedom Club." Of course, the debate on where in the serious spectrum this sort of indulgent fantasia music lies is never certain. But if you think Meat Loaf is the ultimate in musical inspired rock-u-drama then this will certainly turn you on your head. Joshua Glazer, Rovi
